Rifle permits are generally less restrictive than handgun permits across the EU/EEA — Finland's hankintalupa process for long guns typically moves faster than for short arms, though requirements still vary by caliber and configuration, since semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines above certain capacities face additional scrutiny under EU Directive 2017/853's Category B classification. Platform choice matters for competition: AR-15s dominate PCC and dynamic-rifle events for their ergonomics and aftermarket support, while AK-pattern rifles are prized for reliability in harsher conditions.
